Hi, it’s Michelle Hubbard bringing you up to date on all that is going on with Soroptimist International of

Oxnard. We’re only beginning March as I type this and already this amazing group of dynamic women

leaders is accomplishing SO much, and making a difference.

Thursday April 28th. We hosted our annual Live Your Dream Awards dinner at Pacific Corinthian Yacht

Club. The Soroptimist Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women provides women

who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with financial resources to offset costs

associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training.  Recipients can

use the award for tuition, books, childcare, transportation or any other education-related expense.

CONGRATULATIONS to Amanda Araujo, first place recipient.  Amanda is a former foster youth and a

single mother whose son has been diagnosed with Autism.  Amanda will receive her AA Degree from

Oxnard College this spring and plans to transfer to California State University Fresno to major in

communicative disorders, with an emphasis on speech pathology.   She is inspired to help other children

like her son.

Two second place awards were also presented.  Mariah Bergeon has a goal to become a school guidance

counselor working primarily with high school age youth in a school serving low income or “at risk”

youth.  She will graduate in May with a BA in Psychology and hopes to pursue a Master’s Degree in

Counseling and Guidance  at CLU.  Mariah is a single mom with a young son.  Alicia Nichols is pursuing a

Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences at CSUCI and waiting to enter the nursing program to achieve her

lifelong dream to become a nurse.  Alicia is a single mom of a young daughter.

Remember our signature event “Bras for a Cause”? Committee meetings are already happening to

make this year’s event just as spectacular as in the past. Funds raised at this fun party go to support our

efforts creating comfort kits for those coming out of breast cancer surgery. We’ll also be participating in

the upcoming Strawberry Festival and Salsa Festival.

On May 18th from 7”30am to 8:30am, we have our monthly speaker meeting at the Courtyard Mariott

in Oxnard. A yummy breakfast buffet is always served. This month, comedian Byron Walls is speaking on

crime awareness.

We will be up to LOTSS more in the coming months, and no matter what the activity you can bet we’ll

have food, drinks, and FUN! You are welcome to join us at one of our meetings. Or if you’d like to make

a donation, ask some questions, or just talk about this awesome club, email me at
