CONFERENCES AND CONVENTIONS

Our Service Projects

SEPTEMBER 2022

The American Cancer Society offered a day of service to our membership. Tina Cobb, Tori Rocco and President Gail Rocco volunteered their time preparing for the annual Relay for Life by unloading the ACA’s storage unit before the move to set up the event on Friday, September 16th.

College Park Food Share

Food Share of Ventura benefitted from the helping hands of SI/O volunteers! Led by Service Chair Tina Cobb were Juliann Laufer, Maria Workman, Barbara Wolther, Christy Franco, Brooke Rogers Stephens, and Soropti-mister Lee Cobb (who delivered his bride to the warehouse on his beautiful 3-wheeler!) We completed SIX pallets of Emergency Disaster Food boxes in just under two hours. Whew! Amazing how tired, hot, and damp you can get just loading boxes! Good Job, ladies, and gent! #SoroptimistAtWork #SoroptmistCares

Oxnard Shores Beach Park Clean Up! Look Ma! No fog! And warmer than expected. Led by Director Amanda Lee Baxley, President-Elect Gail Rocco, Tori Rocco, Christy Franco, Teresa Sohn, Maria Workman, and Brooke Rogers Stephens headed out with 13 gallon bags to fill. Judging all bags collected, we removed about 30 gallons! Got a "You Go Girls" from City Parks guys, The smiles and approvals of park goers. When we gathered at the end, about an hour, Juliann Laufer had joined us, fresh off the plane. AND $2.70 plus a quarter!!!

Proceeds from the event went to a scholarship to help kids needing shoes and clothing to compete. Helping out were Marion Scherer, Gail Hower, Pat Wilson and Juliann Laufer. Thank you, ladies, for taking time out of your day to help others!

ELDER & DEPENDENT ADULT ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH

The month of June 2021 was declared Elder & Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month by the United Nations. The Oxnard Police Department's Family Protection Unit partnered with several agencies in the County to bring awareness to the potential abuse (physical, emotional, financial) that can victimize our elder community. In addition to the signs in front of the police station, the OPD Family Protection Unit made an awareness video https://youtu.be/TBuTMfYwu3o and received a proclamation from the City Council. SI/Oxnard is a proud sponsor of the OPD/FPU's program.

SHIMLA DAS: SPEAK UP FOR THE POOR

We are proud to sponsor Shimla Das, a young teen in Bangladesh, in cooperation with Speak Up for the Poor (www.speakupforthepoor.org) within their Girls Education Program. The program empowers girls to stay in school, to have a voice in the decisions that affect their own lives, and to have greater opportunities to pursue their dreams and rise out of poverty. Shimla is in eighth grade this year and lives in Baratia village with her family. Shimla is interested in becoming a police officer.

The Courtyard Fountain at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center may not have water in it anymore, but it represents water in its new life as a succulent planter. Soroptimist International of Oxnard was the main sponsor of the beautiful creation by Heritage Succulents.
